Join us in cooking one of our favorite French recipes for kids – Crepes! These crepes are packed with hazelnut spread and topped with whipped topping and strawberries; the perfect quick supplement to our lesson on French culture & geography! We prefer crepes to pancakes, so these are fun for any morning as well.

France for Kids

During our georgraphy study of France, we precluded our recipe with a few activities on the country. I found a free geography sheet where a student can research different facts about France (great for independent research for elementary and middle school kids). We also watched this fact video:

Another cool activity I found on France is a virtual field trip to the Eiffel Tower! This activity took about 30-45 minutes and was super infomative! I learned a lot about the Eiffel Tower as well.

The Recipe

After completeing our short activites on France, we began the cooking process. Crepes are fun but an involved process to make and it takes a little time to get them right. Also, since you are working with hot oil, be sure to use safety goggles, or if you have young kids, keep them far away from the pan!

To make crepes you need the ingredients below. We follow this recipe, but since I am gluten free, we use gluten free pancake mix instead! You will also need a mixing bowl, spatula for flipping crepes, and a pan to cook them in.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk of choice
  • 2 Tbsp avocado oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Toppings:

  • Nutella or other hazelnut spread
  • sliced strawberries
  • whipped cream

Follow the instructions in the link to make the crepes. First you will make the batter, which the kids can do themselves. It makes a thinner version of a pancake batter. If your crepes are coming out too thick, you can always thin the batter more. Cook like crepes in a pan as you would a pancake. We used a small pan because that was easier to flip, but you can use a large pan as well. Cook the crepes about 2 minutes or so on each side, as soon as it starts to brown, you can flip it.

Then, spread with hazelnut spread, fold into thirds, and top with whipped cream and strawberries. Delicious!

So if you are learning about France in your homeschool, or you just want a fun activity to do on a rainy day with the kids, try making some home-made delicious crepes! One of the best French recipes for kids that they whole family can enjoy. Below you can view a video of how to make the crepes.
