Join us in cooking one of our favorite kid-friendly recipes from Spain – Churros! One of our favorite ways to learn about geography is through cooking recipes from all around the world! Such a simple and effective lesson for kids who love to be in the kitchen. Even if you don’t homeschool, you can enjoy an experience in creating something delicious with your children.

Whenever we study Spain, churros is the first food that my kids want to try to make again and again. Usually to make the project even more educational, we include a short fact video about the country we are studying. We chose this video below about Spain:

After watching this brief video, we begin the cooking process. Churros are fun but an involved process to make. Also, since you are working with hot oil, be sure to use safety goggles, or if you have young kids, keep them far away from the frying pan! They can still experience the fun of making churros, without being too close to the popping oil.

To make churros you need the following ingredients below. We follow this recipe, but since I am gluten free, we use gluten free pancake mix instead! You will also need a piping bag shaped liked a star, in order for the churro to have the correct shape

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (250ml) water
  • 1/4 cup (56g) unsalted butter, diced into small cubes
  • 1 Tbsp (13g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (141g) all-purpose flour (scoop and level to measure)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • piping bag with a star tip

Coating:

  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon

The Recipe

Follow the instructions in the link to make the churros. First you will make the dough, which the kids can do themselves. It makes a super thick dough, almost like a sugar cookie but squishier. Then, the dough goes into a piping bag. You will slowly pipe the dough into a pan with hot oil (again, maybe not a job for the children!) We recommend really making those churros crispy. It takes maybe 2 min per side to get them fully fried!

My kids’ favorite part is after frying -once the churros have cooled – they can be rolled in cinnamon sugar! They are so delicious while they are still warm, and after rolled in tons of cinnamon and sugar. We try and eat as many as we can, because leftover churros just are not the same!

So if you are learning about Spain in your homeschool, or you just want a fun activity to do on a rainy day with the kids, try making some home-made delicious churros! One of the best kid-friendly recipes from Spain that they whole family can enjoy. Adios! Enjoy this link to our Instagram of us making the churros:
