With parents posting all their back to school pictures all over social media and students getting excited about purchasing school supplies and starting the new year with classmates, as homeschoolers we always celebrate back to school as well, but in our own way. Why not have some fun with your kids on the 1st day of “not” back to school?!
Many homeschool families have some type of “not back to school” tradition. Maybe they have a party, go out for a special breakfast, take pictures, or take the day to go on an outing.
We don’t have a tradition in our house, but we still like to take the time to do something that the kids in school can’t do. Taking advantage of less crowds in one of the biggest perks in homeschool! So this year we wandered down to our favorite local coffee shop for treats.
Fun Activities
In the past we have made special cakes, and one year we made brownies in the shape of the theoretical “grades” they were entering (because really what homeschooler has an actual grade).
Last year we opted for a fun photo shoot day in our backyard, complete with pets everywhere and playground equipment in the background. The kids enjoyed picking out their outfits and taking the photos their own way.
I know several families in our area who take to the beach or park on the day public schools are back, because it’s finally not so crowded.
We have had parties in the past with our co-op including potlucks. I think its a great way to bring the homeschool community together by planning an event
What is your family’s “not” back to school traditions? Maybe this is the year to create one!
